Assistant Professor Alireza Khaligh (ECE/ISR) and Professor Isaak Mayergoyz (ECE/UMIACS) have received a $154,807 Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) grant to investigate, design and develop a unique silicon carbide (SiC) based battery charger for electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEVs). In this project they will collaborate with the CoolCAD Electronics LLC, College Park, Md., to design and develop a 7.6kW level-2 charger for next generation of EVs and PHEVs.

The funding is part of Round 50 of MIPS awards, which total $4 million to 19 teams of Maryland companies and faculty developing commercially promising technology products. The projects combine $2.5 million from participating companies and $1.5 million from MIPS. Funding supports research in the laboratories of participating university faculty, who work closely with partner companies to advance their products. More than 500 different Maryland companies have received MIPS grants since 1987.
