Assistant Professor Alireza Khaligh (ECE/ISR) is the principal investigator for a new three-year, $438K National Science Foundation GOALI (Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaisons with Industry) award for "Advanced Silicon Carbide-based Novel Hybrid Energy Storage System for Plug-In Electric Vehicles."

Co-PIs include Professor André Tits (ECE/ISR), Associate Professor Patrick McCluskey (ME/CALCE), and Steven Rogers, co-founder, president and chief technology officer of Genovation, a company developing the G2, a plug-in green automobile.

The researchers will develop a novel hybrid energy storage system for electric vehicles. The new system will be composed of a high energy-density battery pack, an ultracapacitor pack and a DC/DC converter. This new lightweight system will weigh less than a conventional high power-density battery pack alone. At the same time it will offer an increased battery lifetime. The new system will be developed, implemented and validated on the powertrain of a new electric car.
