The team of CS Ph.D. students Ching L. Teo and Yezhou Yang is one of eight national winners of the annual Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QInF) competition. The team?s winning research was ?Robots Need Language: A computational model for the integration of vision, language and action.?

Teo is advised by ISR-affiliated Professor Yiannis Aloimonos (CS/UMIACS).

One of the benefits to the winners is the ability to work with a Qualcomm mentor for a year who will guide and collaborate on their research progress. Teo and Yang will be working with Qualcomm?s Ashwin Sampath.

Qualcomm hosted three regional finals in April, one on the East Coast and two in California. Out of 146 applicant teams, 33 were selected in the regional finals to compete for the national honors.

In addition to Teo and Yang, another team with ISR connections?ECE Ph.D. students Timir Datta and Filiz Yesilkoy?was one of the 10 finalists from the East Coast. Datta is co-advised by Associate Professor Pamela Abshire (ECE/ISR) and ISR-affiliated Associate Professor Elisabeth Smela (ME).

The competition is focused on recognizing, rewarding, and mentoring innovative Ph.D. students across a broad range of technical research areas.
