The Milken Institute's 2010 State Technology and Science Index has ranked the State of Maryland #2 in the nation (behind Massachusetts). The last such listing, in 2008, also listed Maryland in the #2 spot. Maryland ranked 4th in 2002.

Maryland ranked first in academic R&D per capita and human capital capacity (which takes into account factors like the number of bachelor's, masters, and doctoral agrees awarded versus a state's population).

The index ranks each state's tech and science capabilities, as well as their success in converting them into companies and high-paying jobs.

The full index and report can be accessed online (opens PDF).
