Alum Himanshu Tyagi (EE Ph.D. 2013) has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure by the Indian Institute of Science, where he is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering. At Maryland, Tyagi was advised by Professor Prakash Narayan (ECE/ISR).

His research interests are in the application of information theory to security, interactive communication and statistical learning.

In 2020 he received the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Medal for Young Scientists, considered to be the highest recognition of promise, creativity and excellence in a young scientist. The award is made annually to those distinguished for these attributes as evidenced by their research work carried out in India.
