ISR-affiliated Professor Dinesh Manocha (CS/ECE) was one of three keynote speakers at the 28th IEEE International Conference on Robot & Human Interactive Communication (IEEE RO-MAN), Oct. 14–18 in New Delhi. Manocha is the Paul Chrisman Iribe Professor in Computer Science and is also on the faculty of the Maryland Robotics Center.

The conference’s theme was “Responsible Robotics and AI for the Real World,” and Manocha spoke on “Autonomous Driving: Simulation and Navigation.” He spoke about the open challenges in this emerging field, including automated driving in dense and urban scenes.

Manocha gave an overview of his recent work on simulation and navigation technologies for autonomous vehicles, and presented a novel simulator, AutonoVi-Sim, that uses recent developments in physics-based simulation, robot motion planning, game engines, and behavior modeling.

He also described novel methods for interactive simulation of multiple vehicles with unique steering or acceleration limits taking into account vehicle dynamics constraints, and presented techniques for navigation with non-vehicle traffic participants such as cyclists and pedestrians.
