Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. The department is searching for a world-class research leader to continue the research, education, and translational growth of the department. Responsibilities include leadership of a research-active academic department, program development with industrial partners, government labs, and foundations, and stewardship of strong academic programs. Applicants should have an earned doctorate in bioengineering or a closely related field; strong leadership ability with proven interpersonal skills; a proven research record with evidence of international recognition; and a commitment to engineering education. Applicants must be qualified for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering.

The Fischell Department of Bioengineering is anchored in A. James Clark Hall, a 184,000-square-foot building constructed in 2018, which is home to world-class research and educational facilities, offering state-of-the-art laboratories, a core scientific instrument facility, student project space, and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices. The Fischell Department of Bioengineering currently has 25 regular tenure track faculty (with plans to expand), 8 core professional track faculty, 32 affiliate faculty members, and 14 staff members. The Department has established relationships with the National Institutes of Health (including the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging & Bioengineering and the National Cancer Institute), the National Science Foundation, Amgen, BD, Beckman Coulter, Olympus; as well as other universities locally and nationally. A transformative $10 million gift from Edward and Jennifer St. John and the Edward St. John Foundation launched the Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM), a collaboration uniting the department with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Together, researchers from these distinct disciplines tackle a broad spectrum of generational health challenges and drive medical innovations that benefit patients in Maryland and beyond. The Department is also dedicated to the vision of engineering entrepreneurship – getting science out of the lab and into the hands of doctors, care providers, and consumers. A number of start-up companies have been generated from ongoing research projects in the Department, and industrial collaborations are further enabling the research efforts to be translated to real-world technologies. With 450+ undergraduate students, 100+ graduate students, and more than $21 million in research expenditures in 2025, the department is a core education and research unit at the University of Maryland. For best consideration, applications should be submitted electronically by June 26, 2026. (See Job Requisition No. JR104095.) Applications should include a cover letter, a complete curriculum vitae (resume), and contact information for five references.
