ISR alumnus Craig T. Lawrence (EE Ph.D. 1998) is joining the University of Maryland’s Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) as deputy director for systems research.

ARLIS is a designated University-Affiliated Research Center (UARC) with the Department of Defense. In its first incarnation it was the Center for the Advanced Study of Language, or CASL. In 2018, the UARC was transferred to a new government sponsor and has been given a new mission. As ARLIS, the UARC will focus on human-machine and social systems, autonomy and artificial intelligence, as well as other advanced technologies in service to needs of the national security, defense and intelligence communities.

Lawrence has been the program manager of the Strategic Technology Office at the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) since 2013. His research interests are in battle management, command and control; autonomy, optimization and control theory; and modeling and simulation. Prior to that, he was a technical director in the Technology Solutions division of BAE Systems.

At Maryland, Lawrence was advised by Professor André Tits (ECE/ISR).
