Professor Cynthia Moss (Psychology/ISR) will become the director of the University of Maryland's Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) program on July 1. NACS is a cross-campus Ph.D. program involving faculty from eight University of Maryland colleges and more than a dozen departments. It also includes affiliate laboratories at NIH, where students can conduct graduate research. NACS was established to offer training in three branches of the field, systems neuroscience, computational neuroscience and cognitive science, with an emphasis on work at the interface of these disciplines. Currently, about 40 students are enrolled in the NACS Program, with home departments in Animal and Avian Science, Biology, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hearing and Speech, Human Development, Kinesiology, Linguistics, and Psychology. NACS became an official degree-granting program in 1996 under the directorship of another ISR faculty member, Professor Avis Cohen (Biology/ISR). NACS has been extremely successful in enhancing the visibility of neuroscience and cognitive science on campus by attracting an increasing number of graduate students and new faculty.
